Diploma of Shiatsu Therapy

Yin YangThe Diploma of Shiatsu Therapy is the minimum training requirement for professional practice.

The aim of this course is to give students a thorough understanding of Shiatsu and Oriental philosophy, and to develop high levels of proficiency in Shiatsu massage.

The course is both innovative and challenging. The emphasis is on a practical, body-orientated approach with a strong knowledge and understanding of the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Students also develop skills in complimentary bodywork and energy techniques for use with Shiatsu.

To enhance their practice of Shiatsu all students are encouraged to meditate and attend either a Chi Kung, Tai Chi or Yoga class

The Diploma of Shiatsu Therapy is accredited with The Society for Natural Therapists and Researchers (SNTR). This is a national organisation, and graduate students can apply for membership upon completion of their studies.

The School is an accredited teaching establishment approved by the Australian Charter of Natural Health Practitioners.

All graduate students must complete 200 hours of Shiatsu practice (comprising of 120 hours in the Student Clinic and 80 hours of home practice). Graduates must also complete or hold a Senior First Aid Certificate.

This course runs over 18 months. There are six terms of ten weeks and six weekend intensives. Classes are held two nights per week in the first or third term for our Anatomy and Physiology course.

  • Cost is $5225 including GST
  • Deposit of $300 is required upon enrolment
  • Regular payments may be negotiated on a monthly or term basis
  • Classes begin in January and July of each year

Advanced Diagnostics is an in-depth exploration of the body energy as it manifests in ourselves and the wider universe. TOP

Advanced Shiatsu Dynamics explores the use of the five-element model and its psychological aspects for diagnosis and treatment in Shiatsu. This will involve experiential work, case studies and practical work. TOP

Anatomy & Physiology is an introduction to the major systems of the body, muscular, skeletal, nervous etc. Students will be given a basic understanding of the Western system so as to enrich their knowledge of the meridian pathways. TOP

Barefoot Shiatsu is a style of Shiatsu that uses the feet as well as the palms and fingers to apply pressure to the body. It is a dynamic and easy style to learn, and students will develop a grounded and relaxed approach to Shiatsu as well as learning a basic routine. TOP

Chinese Massage Therapy (Tui Na) introduces complimentary traditional Chinese massage techniques that can be used with Shiatsu to treat a variety of disharmonies. TOP

Classical Shiatsu employs a number of full body routines in different positions, such as side-lying and seated, and has a greater emphasis on the use of thumbs, elbows and knees to release blocked and stagnant Chi. TOP

Food as Medicine is an Oriental perspective, exploring the concepts of Oriental medicine, and introducing you to the use of food remedies to treat problems and imbalances. TOP

Foundations of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) includes a history of TCM, theory of meridians, the relationship between Chi, blood and body fluid, the Zang Fu organs, commonly used acupuncture points and common patterns of disharmony. TOP

Professional Practice The aim of this unit is to provide the newly qualified practitioner with the skills to help them set up in private practice together with an understanding of the ethics and dynamics of client practitioner relations. TOP

Tsubo/Acupressure involves the study of the major Tsubo and their uses in energy dynamics and balancing. Point combination for specific imbalances, and the use of moxibustion and cupping techniques. TOP

Zen Shiatsu is a meditative style of Shiatsu that uses body weight and a 1 point-2 hands technique. Students learn meridian stretches, techniques for tonification and sedation. Makko-Ho stretches are learned, plus back and Hara diagnosis and how to plan treatments. TOP
