Shiatsu
is a therapy developed in Japan. It aims to harmonise the body's flow of
energy called 'Chi'. Based on the principles of Oriental Medicine, it can
be effective in treating a wide range of problems including such things
as back problems, migraine, pre-menstrual syndrome, stress related disorders,
chronic fatigue and pain.
One
of the true benefits of Shiatsu is that it is an excellent way to maintain
good health.
Shiatsu,
as part of regular self-care, combined with a good diet and a healthy
life-style is a holistic way to achieving good health and well-being.
Shiatsu
is also valuable if used when a person is already in a state of disease.
Here
the aim is to treat the cause of the problem rather than just eliminating
the symptoms. Shiatsu works by restoring the body's energy to its natural
flow. This is done by releasing blocked or stagnant energy caused by
an energy depletion or an excess of energy. When the energy is in balance
the body will heal itself.
Shiatsu
therapists use fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet to apply pressure
to the body and restore the flow of energy through the channels, known as
meridians.
A Shiatsu
treatment is given on a futon mat on the floor, and loose, comfortable clothing
is usually worn. A
treatment takes about one hour.
